Instructions for Applicants

 

            Eligibility:  Applicants must currently be seniors in high school or high school graduates enrolled as full-time students in accredited colleges, universities or vocational/technical schools. Scholarship grants are not awarded for graduate study.  The program is open to all eligible students regardless of age, race, sex, creed or color. 

 

            Family income in the tax year immediately preceding the school year for which assistance is requested may not exceed the median income in Lee County, Florida.

 

Criteria: The Scholarship Committee will consider academic achievement, community service, and financial need.  Preference will be shown to applicants living &/or working on Sanibel, or having parents living or working on Sanibel.

 

Application Process.  You can download the application form by clicking on the following link, Scholarship Application.  Applications should be submitted to the Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee no later than April 1 preceding the start of the school year.  The applications should be sent to: Chairperson Scholarship Committee, Sanibel Captiva Lions Club, PO Box 391, Sanibel, FL 33957.

 

Each application must include the following:

 

  1. Information provided by the high school which includes transcripts and recommendations. For students currently enrolled in college or vocational/technical schools, a transcript or last grade report must be submitted.

 

  1. A copy of parents’ and student’s, if any, Federal Income Tax For 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ with supporting forms for the taxable year preceding the school year for which assistance is requested.

 

  1. It is essential that the application be as complete as possible and submitted by April 1 to be considered for the next school year. Additional or updated information material must be submitted no later than June 1. 

 

Awarding of the Grant.  Applicants will be advised of selections by June 15.

 

Successful applicants must provide proof of enrollment completed by the college, university or vocational/technical school including the assigned Student ID number. This should be submitted to the Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee and  will confirm that the applicant is a full-time student.  Upon receipt of this information and approval of the Scholarship Committee, the Treasurer will be instructed to forward a check for one-half of the grant to the school in the student’s name.

 

At the end of the first quarter, or semester, it will be the responsibility of the scholarship holder to obtain a grade transcript and evidence of continuing enrollment and forward the same to the Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee.  If the work has been satisfactory (normally a 2.0 GPA or above) a check for the second half of the grant will be issued.

 

A grant may be withdrawn for any of the following reasons: (1) conduct that would result in discredit to the Lions Charities or the Lions Club; (2) participation in the possession, use or sale of illegal drugs, alcohol and /or controlled substances; (3) failure to meet the school’s academic standards; (4) failure to successfully carry the minimum semester hours to be a full-time student (normally 12 credit hours).

 

Eligibility for subsequent school years will be reviewed for each awardee. At the end of each school year, the awardee must again obtain a grade transcript and evidence of continuing enrollment and forward the same to the Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee.  The scholarship will continue for each awardee for a total period of no more than four years or until graduation, whichever comes first, as long as the award criteria continues to be met.
