Each year the Sanibel-Captiva Lions Club offers, to qualified students, the Francis Bailey Scholarship Award(s). These scholarships are funded by income from the Francis Bailey Scholarship Fund.
Also, as part of its local donations program, the Board of Directors of the Sanibel-Captiva Lions Charities, Inc. may budget a specific amount each year for scholarship aid. Both programs are administered by a Scholarship Committee appointed by the President of the Sanibel-Captiva Islands Lions Club and approved by its Board of Directors.

for the scholarship awards as adopted by the Board of Directors March 11, 1992 and revised May 2007.

Sanibel History Night
“A Night with the Bailey Boys”
On March 19, 2008 was the Lions’ presentation of the history of Sanibel, as told by its two native sons. Francis and Sam Bailey spent 90 minutes recalling their experiences and life in general, on Sanibel. This event was held at the Sanibel Community House and donations were used to increase The Sanibel Captiva Lions Club Scholarship Fund. Local videographer, Rusty Farst produced a DVD which is for sale at Bailey’s General Store. The proceeds from the sale of DVDs also go to the Scholarship Fund.
These contributions increase our ability to provide additional scholarships to qualified applicants, island residents or children of people employed on the island. As some of you may know, the Bailey family homesteaded on Sanibel in the late 1800s, when land sold for $10 to $25 per acre and taxes were less than $5.00 for a 100 acre parcel. The Fort Myers Press ran ads for the land such as: “Forty acres of splendid vegetable land on Sanibel Island, near steamboat landing, daily steamers, good location, a splendid bargain at $15 per acre. Suitable for early vegetables of all kinds.”
Seeing where our island is today, one only has to ponder the events that took place between then and now to understand that these two men are walking, talking history databases. They roamed free through their childhood, middle years and right up to the present day. The requested donation is $15. You can pick up a copy at Bailey’s General Store today.
